Things You Should be Hyped About: Not Playing Uncharted?

23 04 2012

The Uncharted series is widely regarded as one of the best things to happen to gaming this generation.  Coming off of a slightly slow beginning, the now flagship series from Developer Naughty Dog (Famous for their work on franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter.) has taken flight as one of the must play series in gaming.

A rich storyline follows the would-be Indana Jones stand in, Nathan Drake, as he and his mentor scour the Earth for things only five or ten people give the slightest shit about.  Stuff like oil lamps, and tattered old maps detailing the hidden locations of items used by dudes who you didn’t care about much in history class.  Naughty Dog’s take on the rough-and-rugged explorer tale (which is older than any of us) and puts a rather magical scope of humility on it, with the cast of characters that will leave you ready to start the next game.   BUT WHY WOULD YOU EVEN PLAY THEM?

They’re like the same guy… Except one is a rotten street rat, and the other is a renowned professor.

One of the biggest notes of respect given to the Uncharted series was how everything in the game had the scope of a cinematic.  The game played like a movie.  Most people who have played the games (myself included.) will insist that this game would have made just a good of a show or movie.

Well, Youtuber MorphinaPG agreed, and did an incredible thing, putting his time (Time is money, friend.) where his mouth is.  He played through all three games, recording his trips through the stylish locales and brilliantly designed workings, then went back, and edited the pieces together beautifully.  Ultimately, he took his finished, polished products, and uploaded them to Youtube.  What we gained, is a true movie-like experience through the course of all three titles in the Uncharted series.

Amazingly, he eliminated almost all of the button press prompts, ammo pickups, and more, allowing the player (Or watcher, excuse me) to really get immersed in this masterpiece that he’s created.  Thanks to this wonderful, wonderful man, people who don’t have access to a PS3 will now have the ability to experience one of the greatest stories in gaming history!

(That heart is for me.  Stay mad.)

Unlike most gaming videos on Youtube (specifically “Let’s Play” videos), these videos aren’t designed to highlight a glitch or be a walk through.  They’re specifically designed to all people to experience the true cinematic brilliance of Uncharted.

Pros:

  • If you don’t own a PS3, you can experience one of the best stories ever told in gaming.
  • Brilliant editing makes a series of games that would take dozens of hours take  a mere few!
  • Non-stop action thrill ride roller coaster fun.  (Read that in Don LaFontaine’s voice.)

Cons:

  • You will miss out on some really intutive puzzles, and gameplay.  The best in the genre since the original Tomb Raider.
  • 480p!  (It still looks damn good, though.)
  • Few button press prompts and ammo pickups  drops immersion, slightly.  (Hardly even a con.)

All in all, this is truly a wonderful thing that Morphinapg has done.  I, for one, couldn’t be more thankful!

You can check all three movies out, right on youtube:
Part1:   Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
Part2:   Uncharted 2:  Among Thieves
Part3:   Uncharted 3:  Drake’s Deception

As always, if you have any comments, I’m always interested in what my readers think!  I personally loved the hell out of these, but I want to know how you felt!
